Who Requires A Licence?The Underlying Principle of the Sale of Liquor Act 1989;
The sale of liquor to the public requires a licence |

· On-licenses · Off-licenses | · Club licenses · Special licenses |
It is possible for two or more licences of different kinds to be issued to the same premise, ie a premises may have both a catering and an off licence.
A licence issued in New Zealand cannot be sold or transferred to another individual, partnership or company. This means that if you purchase a business or premise which has a licence, the licence becomes null and void when the business or premise changes hands. You will need to apply for a new licence. In most cases if an application is made, the DLA will grant a Temporary Authority to allow you to continue selling liquor until your new licence is issued.
